LAS VEGAS, Nev., Feb 9, 2008 — Defending Olympic all-around champion Paul Hamm of Waukesha, Wis., won the all-around at the Winter Cup Challenge at the Las Vegas Sports Center in Las Vegas, Nev. This is the first time Hamm has competed in a full all-around event since the 2004 Olympics.

“With this being my first competition, I didn’t know exactly what to expect,” said Hamm, who took time off after the 2004 Olympic Games to complete his education. “I was happy that my training held together. It’s a grueling two days of all-around competition. I had a very good day, even with a couple of errors. There is always room for improvement.”

Hamm posted a two-day total score of 185.850 points, followed by Raj Bhavsar of Houston in second and Alexander Artemev of Morrison Colo. in third with scores of 178.600 and 178.100, respectively.

In addition to the all-around, individual event titles were also awarded: Hamm, floor and parallel bars; Kevin Tan of Fremont, Calif., still rings; Artemev, pommel horse; Bhavsar, vault; and Joseph Hagerty of Rio Rancho, N.M., horizontal bar.

Hamm, Bhavsar, Hagerty and Sean Townsend of Dickinson, Texas, were named to the senior national team. Three additional gymnasts will be named later to the team by the Men’s Program Committee. The seven members of the 2007 World Championship Team automatically retained their national team status: Guillermo Alvarez of Denver; Artemev; David Durante of Garwood, N.J.; Sean Golden of Camden, N.J.; Jonathan Horton of Houston; Sho Nakamori of Albany, Calif.; and Tan.
