Event winners crowned at 2009 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn., April 11, 2009 – Temple University’s Katie Canning and Yale University’s Alina Liao added individual event titles to their shared all-around crown during the final day of competition at the 2009 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate Championships, held at Southern Connecticut State University’s Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven, Conn. Canning won vault and Liao tied for first on uneven bars with Seattle Pacific University’s Brianna Schwartz. Cornell University’s Stacey Ohara won balance beam and Texas Woman’s University’s Tonya Pipkorn and Amie Boles tied for first on floor exercise. On vault, Canning posted a score of 9.825, followed by Texas Woman’s Brittany Parker in second with a 9.762 and Temple’s Kaitlyn Watson and Cornell’s Tiffany Chen in third at 9.750. Liao and Schwartz each scored a 9.750 on uneven bars with Seattle Pacific’s Kaysha Heck finishing third with a 9.725. Ohara topped Cornell teammate Melanie Stanbridge on balance beam, 9.850 to 9.800, with Pipkorn and the University of Bridgeport’s Emily Repko posting scores of 9.750 to share third place. Pipkorn and Boles won floor exercise after each earned a 9.850, followed by a four-way tie for third place.
