Russian gymnast Yuri Ryazanov dies in car crash

MOSCOW - October 20, 2009 - Twenty-two-year-old Russian gymnast Yuri Ryazanov, who won the bronze medal in the all-around at last week’s World Championships in London, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, in a car crash, according to local media reports.

The reports said a car being driven by Ryazanov on the Volga federal highway, in the Vladimir region, inexplicably moved over to the wrong side of the road and crashed into an oncoming car. Ryazanov died immediately, while two passengers in the oncoming car were injured. Local police opened an investigation into the case but would make no immediate comments.

Ryazanov has been a member of the Russian gymnastics team since 2006. He was the 2008 European champion and a member of the 2008 Russian Olympic team that took sixth place.
