2008-09 U.S. National Team Selection
Men’s gymnastics
Junior National Team - Based on the final junior all-around rankings from the Visa Championships, the top seven 14-15 year-old men make the Junior National Team 14-15, and the top seven age-eligible 16-18 year-old men make the Junior National Team 16-18.
Senior National Team - Fourteen men will qualify for the men’s senior national team through their performances at the 2008 Visa Championships. Ten gymnasts with the highest point totals determined through the National Team Point System, which assigns a point value based on rankings in individual events, will be named to the team. The remaining four are chosen by the Men’s Program Committee. The Men’s Senior National Team will be re-named at the 2009 Winter Cup Challenge, and those selection procedures have not been finalized by the MPC.
- MPC National Team Points Program. The top 10 athletes on each event receive points from both the preliminary and finals competitions at the Visa Championships. The points from each day of competition will be added together to create the athletes Final Points Total.
- Points will be awarded on each event according to the following:
First place = 11 points
Second place = 10 points
Third place = 9 points
Fourth place = 7 points
Fifth place = 6 points |
Sixth place = 5 points
Seventh place = 4 points
Eighth place = 3 points
Ninth place = 2 points
Tenth place = 1 point |
- Athletes who tie for individual events will be awarded duplicate points with the next point total being skipped. (example: tie for individual event in third – both athletes awarded 9 points, the next highest ranking athlete receives fifth place points and is awarded 6 points). The points awarded for the six events will be totaled for each athlete each day. An athlete’s day one and day two competitive points will be totaled for that athlete’s Final Points results. There is a tie-breaker if there is a tie in points for the fifth and final spot.
Women’s gymnastics
Junior National Team - The top 12 in final all-around junior rankings from the Visa Championships will be named to the team.
Senior National Team - The senior national team will include the top 12 gymnasts from the final all-around rankings from the Visa Championships.
Additional spots for the Women’s National Team - Up to an additional four athletes (junior or senior) may be selected to the National Team by the Athlete Selection Committee. Slots not filled under the criteria listed above may be added to the four wild card slots determined by the Athlete Selection Committee.
Rhythmic gymnastics
Junior and Senior National Team - The top eight juniors and the top eight seniors in their respective all-around standings from the Visa Championships qualify for the national team.
Acrobatic gymnastics
Senior National Team - Pair/groups must compete at the senior elite level at the 2008 National Championships and the qualifying event. Pair/groups are evaluated at the National Championships, and only results and performance from the National Championships count toward team selection. The top two pair/groups in each event (women's pairs, men's pairs, mixed pairs, women's group, men's group) determined by cumulative scores (Visa Championships, three exercises) are automatically selected to the team as long as they have met designated score and difficulty minimums per the Senior National Team Selection Procedures. If the minimums are not met, the pair/group can still be considered for selection; however, placement is not automatic. The Acrobatic Gymnastics Program Committee can select additional pair/groups for inclusion on the team up to a maximum of three pair/groups per event. The following areas are considered when selecting additional national team members: scores, final placement, element difficulty, skill selection, artistry and presentation.
Junior National Team - The junior national team is selected in the same manner as the senior team with the requirement that pair/groups must compete at the junior elite level at the 2008 National Championships and qualifying event.
